U.S. Senator Judd Gregg is warning the "war on terrorism" will be expensive and time-consuming. NHPR's Trish Anderton reports.

IN A CONFERENCE CALL WITH REPORTERS TODAY, GREGG SAID THE U-S RESPONSE TO LAST WEEK?S ATTACKS IN NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON WOULD BE COMPLEX. HE WARNED THAT EVEN THOUGH THE U-S IS MOVING TOWARD BOLSTERING ITS INTELLIGENCE FORCES, IT WILL TAKE TIME TO GET RESULTS.

You can?t just go out and hire some guy who?s gonna be able to infiltrate a terrorist cell, which is usually a clannish group, a family. It usually takes years to get those people in place and have them be effective.

GREGG CRITICIZED THE ANTI-TERRORIST STRIKES LAUNCHED BY THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION THREE YEARS AGO. THEN, THE U-S STRUCK TARGETS IN SUDAN AND AFGHANISTAN, IN RESPONSE TO THE TERRORIST BOMBINGS OF TWO U-S EMBASSIES. GREGG CHARACTERIZED THAT ATTACK AS QUOTE: ARBITRARILY SHOOTING SOME MISSILES. HE PROMISED THIS TIME THE U-S WOULD RECRUIT ALLIES AROUND THE WORLD FOR AN INTENSIVE AND COORDINATED EFFORT. GREGG ADDED, THE COMING WAR ON TERRORISM WILL BE COSTLY.

Just the rebuilding of nyc will be expensive, maintaining the air travel system will be expensive, protecting ourselves militarily will be expensive. This will not be done on the cheap and it shouldn?t be.

GREGG IS BACKING THE CREATION OF A NEW POSITION OF DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL TO COMBAT TERRORISM. HE SAID HE?S LOOKING AT OTHER STEPS TO INCREASE SAFETY HERE AT HOME, INCLUDING COORDINATING TERRORISM RESPONSE EFFORTS AMONG ALL U-S AGENCIES, AND BEEFING UP THE REQUIREMENTS FOR AIRPORT SECURITY STAFF.
