If you were offered a crystal ball that could predict your health in later life, would you look inside? A host of startup companies are betting people will.

Personal genetic testing companies are offering their services online, directly to consumers. In exchange for a pretty good sized fee and a DNA sample, you can learn your genetic risk for developing dozens of diseases, from diabetes to Alzheimer’s.

Critics say it’s too early to trust the technology. But reporter Boonsri Dickinson decided to test it out. She sent a sample of her DNA to three testing companies - Navigenics, 23andMe, and deCODE genetics - for a glimpse into her future. She wrote about the experience for DISCOVER Magazine.
