Girl Power

By Andrew Walsh on Monday, June 9, 2008.

The world faces a lot of big problems -- poverty, AIDS, hunger, war, just to name a few. And the folks at the Nike Foundation say all of these problems can be fixed by girls.

That's the premise of a new campaign called The Girl Effect, and it goes like this: Humanitarian aid that's sent to developing countries will bring about the most positive change if it's targeted specifically at girls. Through a series of videos and flash demonstrations, The Girl Effect website demonstrates ways that young women in struggling communities around the world can turn their lives and their villages around, if they're given the right opportunities. For example, the website points to studies that show women reinvest 90 percent of their income into their families, while men only reinvest 30 to 40 percent.
