More Free Music from Nine Inch Nails

By Andrew Walsh on Tuesday, May 6, 2008.

You can't say musician Trent Reznor hasn't embraced the digital age. The Nine Inch Nails front man broke new ground in the world of music distribution in March with the online release of a collection of new albums. Now he's offering another album online, and he's not charging a dime for the download.

This latest record is called The Slip, and it's more reminiscent of previous NIN studio material than March's Ghosts release. The Ghosts collection consisted of four albums of instrumentals and soundscapes. Fans could download the first one for free, or pay five dollars for the entire package, including album artwork. They could also purchase various physical versions of the collection for more money.

After earning a reported $1.6 million dollars on the Ghosts venture, Reznor announced yesterday on the NIN website that The Slip is available for free download to anyone interested. "Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years," he wrote. "This one's on me."

Like previous NIN material, The Slip is licensed under Creative Commons; Fans are encouraged to remix the songs and share their versions.
