The New Generation of Catholics

By Laura Knoy on Thursday, April 17, 2008.

This week marks Pope Benedict XVI makes his first visit to the United States. It’s the first time in the 21st Century that American Catholics will be visited by their Pope. But it also serves as a time for the one-quarter of Americans who identify themselves as Catholics to reflect on the state of the Church. We’ll look at the Catholic Church in 2008- who practices, how they do so, and what impact a new generation of worshipers is making.

Guests

  • Father Edward Arsenault, Moderator of the Curia for the Diocese of Manchester
  • Father Benedict Guevin, Benedictine monk and Professor of Theology at St. Anselm College
  • Michelle Dillon, Catholic scholar, Professor of Sociology at the University of New Hampshire, and author of Catholic Identity: Balancing Reason, Faith, and Power

Hypocrisy continued

Another example of hypocrisy: John from Rochester said that public reports state McCormack`s hiding and enabling 17 abusive priests when working for cardinal Law in Boston- but Arsenault evaded any direct answer to the claim, and instead, said that bishops preach God`s words. If that is true, does Arsenault infer that God DOES approve for bishops and priests to inflict and enable the crime of sexual abuse of children?! Ridiculous- God would never teach a thing! Ms. Dillon did follow up & point out that many of the enablers- bishops and cardinals- remain as church "leaders" today and yet continue to remain unaccountable for their crimes because of faulty statutes of limitations. She noted that the today`s youth are very aware of these hypocrital circumstances.
