Ultimate Blogs

On Thursday's Word of Mouth, we talk with Sarah Boxer, former New York Times media critic and author of Ultimate Blogs: Masterworks from the Wild Web. Sarah combed the wide, vast, and often self-referential blogosphere to find the diamonds in the rough. Her book is a collection and explanation of her favorite sites.

One blog that isn't mentioned in Sarah's book just popped up in January, and it's gaining popularity at a startling speed. It's called Stuff White People Like, and it's a hilarious - and sometimes painful - dissection of white, educated, upper-middle-class culture. The site is featured on this week's Very Short List, and VSL's Sara Vilkomerson joins us to talk about it.

My friend tuned me into Stuff White People Like about a month ago. As a student at Tufts University surrounded by the group that the blog focuses on, it's pretty amazing to see just how well they've got it down. It's one of the few blogs I actually laugh out loud at when reading. It's also got some great sociological content too - talk about taking the familiar and making it strange.

They don't have a lot of info on who writes the entries - I'd love to know more about its authors.

Thanks Jacob! If you want to read more about the man behind the blog, the L.A. Times had a great column about him. You can read it here.
