By Laura Knoy on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
Primaries in Rhode Island, Vermont, Texas, and Ohio could prove decisive in the race for the Democratic nomination. My name is Jamie and I am an avid listener to your show. I live in Southern Vermont and have just returned from casting my vote. I'd like to share my experience because at this moment I feel that perhaps myself and other Vermonters constitutional right has been violated. I am proud to be an American and feel very fortunate that I am given an opportunity to choose our Commander in Chief. I feel that it is a very personal decision and a responsibility to be taken seriously.
At the Town Hall: I gave the first clerk my name and proceeded to the next to receive my ballot. It was at that point that I was ASKED which party I was voting for. Needless to say I was flabberghasted and thought it a very inappropriate question. When I asked 'why?', I was shown three different paper ballots and told I could only vote for one person, so which sheet did I want? With much hesitation I gave her my decision,(please note that there were others nearby to hear my choice & I theirs for which I am embarrassed). Thus, the appropriate letter was noted by my name.
I then went to the voting booth and marked my ballot, folding so that no one could get a glimpse. I was about to place it in the cardboard box and at that moment was asked "What did you vote?". With much hesitation, I abided by the clerks' given instruction and stated my parties choice. Again, the appropriate letter was placed by my name.
My husband and I left and as we drove home I became even more frustrated. My ONE vote is precious to me and something that I don't wish to share with everyone. We live in the land of the FREE and each and every one of us (registered voters) are entitled to that one moment where we can feel empowered! I felt that way walking into the Town Office and felt that my "bubble had just been burst" walking out.
Many questions are running through my mind.
1) Why weren't we given only one ballot listing all candidates with instructions to vote for only one?
2) Is there a national a/o state survey going on to show the difference between registered voters w/ their dedicated party to their actual vote?
3) Can't I have one day, every four years, that I can voice my opinion privately and believe that I am heard?
God Bless America!
