What the Cod Can Teach the Tuna

By Laura Knoy on Wednesday, February 20, 2008.

Researchers from around the world met in Boston over the weekend to examine the depleted state of our oceans, and specifically the Tuna. For help, they used not only the latest technology but looked back at past mistakes from centuries ago, contained in logbooks, in stories of New England fishermen, and the history of New England’s beloved Cod.

cod and dams

The US Fish Commissioner's of the 1870's indicted the construction of dams impassable to andromous fishes as a key factor in the significant decline of ocean fisheries. Overfishing and the type of fishing technology was also blamed. Their reports are fascinating reading. We are fighting to keep the hope alive that the Casco Bay- Presumpscot- Sebago Lake watershed once described in 1717 as "the greatest fishery in ye world" will be someday be reconnected. The State of Maine, US Fish and Wildlife, and even American Rivers have no interest in seeing the river-lake reconnected. The private deal is being presented by the State of Maine at the South Portland Sheraton at 5:30 on Feb 28. I would suggest anyone who wants to see the Ocean Fishery restored attend because this deal erodes the gains made before the US Supreme Court that gives the States power to require fishways and I do not mean trap and truck but rather fish ladders. The website has more detail.
