Giuliani Calls for Military Expansion

By Josh Rogers on Wednesday, January 2, 2008.

Campaigning in New Hampshire Wednesday, Republican Rudy Giuliani called for a broad expansion of the military. New Hampshire Public Radio's Josh Rogers has more.

Rudy Giuliani says doubling American troop levels in Afghanistan to more than 50,000 would quell violence there and improve stability in neighboring Pakistan. The former New York mayor also wants to add ten combat brigades to the Army and twenty ships to the Navy.

Speaking at a VFW hall in Hooksett, Giuliani claimed to be the country’s best hope for ensuring a safe and prosperous America.

I think the two most important things we need is someone who can deal with the terrorist war against us, and someone who can deal with the domestic economy. And I think I've had the most experience in both of those areas.

Giuliani’s campaign strategy has de-emphasized Iowa and New Hampshire and he’ll remain here during today’s caucuses. His proposal comes as the latest local poll has him running a distant third to Mitt Romney and John McCain, and losing support among voters who cite national security and terrorism as top priorities.
