Republican Mitt Romney is stepping up his criticism of GOP presidential rival John McCain.

After greeting voters at Pat's Peak Ski Area, Mitt Romney told reporters that John McCain needs to explain his changed positions on immigration reform and the Bush tax cuts.

"Under his bill that he fought for, everybody who came here illegally could stay here forever. And does he still believe that, or does he not believe that? Likewise on taxation. He says now he's for making the Bush tax cuts permanent. Does he admit that he was wrong in voting against them before?"

Recent local polls have shown John McCain gaining ground on Mitt Romney despite being vastly outspent.

In a statement, the Arizona Senator dismissed Romney's criticism as a flailing attempt to maintain relevance.

Mitt Romney, meanwhile, says he's the only Republican running strong in both Iowa and New Hampshire.
