POLLSTERS GOOFING

POLLSTERS GOOFING UP?

Pollsters apparently ask who voters would choose if the election were held today, and apparently many people tend to pick one of the front runners so as not to "waste their vote".

However, perhaps pollsters should also ask who voters would LIKE to vote for, assuming all had an equal chance of winning. The answers might be very surprising.

I spent a few hours helping a friend canvass in Hampton for Senator Biden this last Saturday, and I was surprised by the number of folks who said that he was their first or second choice, but they wouldn't actually vote for him because they felt compelled to choose from only the current front runners. Many people were seriously irritated that only Hilary and Obama were getting substantial coverage.

I should add that, although I was helping my friend who is a Biden volunteer, I am myself undecided, and I have a great deal of sympathy for the folks who were unhappy about the uneven (and often VERY shallow) news coverage. I don't give a damn about Hilary's cleavage, or even Obama's youthful experience with cocaine. The Exchange is much better than average in this respect, but you are still leaving a large market rather unsatisfied. Could we please have some careful contrasts of ALL the candidates' views on an issue-by-issue basis? It seems pretty straightforward, and I wonder why practically no news outlet makes an obvious point of it.
