Giuliani Touts Private Sector Solutions For Health Care

Republican Presidential candidate Rudolph Giuliani spent two days campaigning in New Hampshire this week.

NHPR correspondent Roger Wood caught up with him in Londonderry and files this report.

The former New York mayor stuck to traditional Republican themes during a town hall style appearance.

He told several hundred employees of a high-tech company that he advocates less government, lower taxes and more emphasis on the private sector.

He specifically criticized Democrat Hillary Clinton's plan for universal health care coverage. In contrast, Giuliani proposes a tax break.

"I would give you a 15 thousand dollar tax exemption per family, 75 hundred dollars per person, to go buy your own health insurance. If you can find a premium for less than 15 thousand or less than 75 hundred, you keep the money in a health savings account tax-free."

Giuliani said that his plan would allow more Americans to buy private insurance and lower its cost.

He also vowed to work to abolish the inheritance tax and retain the present 15 percent tax on capital gains.
