Several presidential candidates made campaign stops in the state to tout policies related to veterans.

Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards spoke to a roomful of students and faculty at Plymouth State University about veterans’ issues.

He said that many veterans who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder are returning to war after short visits at home without treatment.

“PTSD is prevalent. It’s everywhere and a lot of these young men women are literally being left on their own. They come back and don’t get the mental health care they need, they don’t get the services they need. There’s a huge backlog at the Veterans Administration. And this is a place where America needs to honor its responsibility again like generations ago.”

Edwards added that as president he’d eliminate that backlog by Memorial Day of 2009.

Senator Barack Obama also met with veterans in Nashua.

And former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney stopped in Manchester to tout his plan to help military families with education.
