New Hampshire's senior Republican official announced his backing of Mitt Romney at a rally moments before Romney filed his candidacy at the Secretary of State's office.

Senator Gregg said Romney's record in business, at the 2002 Olympics and as Massachusetts governor show Romney has been what Gregg termed a "results-oriented conservative."

"This is the type of leadership we need in Washington, someone who's going to bring the values which we as the Republican Party represent - the values of a strong defense, of fiscal conservativism, of a commitment to the individual entrepreneur, an understanding that it's individuals who make the difference in this nation, not the government."

Gregg told reporters he'd been mulling an endorsement ever since he and his wife, Kathy, dined with Mitt and Ann Romney last winter.

He added that he appreciated the conservative way Romney went about gaining his support, by asking once and letting him make up his own mind.
