In 1985, former doctor Norm Payson co-founded HealthSource, which
grew to be one of the nation’s largest health maintenance organizations.
In the latest installment of our 25 in 25 series, we’ll look back at health care pioneer Norm Payson’s own career, and at the state of health care in New Hampshire today.

1948:
Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey

1970: Earns bachelor's degree from MIT

1973: Earns M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School

1973-82: Works as a family physician in California and other areas, including a Native American reservation

1985: Co-founds Healthsource, Inc. in Concord; the company goes on to become one of the largest health care companies in the U.S..

1989: Healthsource goes public

1997: Healthsource sold to CIGNA Corporation

1998-2002: Serves as CEO of Oxford Health Plans; credited with leading Oxford's financial turnaround

2001: Begins serving on Board of Overseers for Dartmouth Medical School

2003: Named the highest-paid executive in for-profit health care in a report by health care advocacy group Families USA; serves as a financial supporter of Concord Hospital's Payson Center for Cancer Care

2005: Named Chairman of the Board of Concentra, Inc. (now Viant), a health care payment company based in Illinois; advises and invests in several health care initiatives

 

 
On New Hampshire



What are the most significant ways that New Hampshire has changed over the past 25 years?

New Hampshire has lost some of its rural charm, especially south of Concord.  Growth, however, has resulted in a vibrant and dynamic economy with a highly educated population.  Quality of life remains singularly positive in New Hampshire.

What are the most significant ways that health care and medicine have changed over the past 25 years?

Many of the State’s hospitals have acquired local physician practices leaving, in particular, relatively few independent primary care physicians.

The health care financing market is dominated by Blue Cross.

What Granite Stater(s) would you say inspired you? In what way?

Dr. Merwyn Bagan, who as a charismatic and highly respected physician, was able to lead independent physicians into participating in their own health plan.

What would you consider your favorite spot in New Hampshire and why?

The Balsams in Dixville Notch – beautiful, remote and old New Hampshire.

What would you like to see accomplished in New Hampshire over the next 25 years?

Low growth with economic prosperity and revitalization of the North Country.
