Arizona Senator John McCain has returned to New Hampshire to campaign and participate in Tuesday’s Republican Presidential debates.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s Dan Gorenstein reports.

McCain met with Concord High School students this morning and shared his views on the war in Iraq.

He described the Iraqi government as ineffective.

But says that the troop surge is effective and must continue.

He conceded what he is saying isn’t popular, but remains confident that he will do well in the state’s primary.

"At this time in 2000 we had a 3% name recognition. And we are going to do what we did this time, go to town hall meetings, they are well attended, a lot of enthusiasm, we have a lot of friends, base of political support, so I am sure we will do fine."

According to the UNH Survey Center’s most recent poll, which was conducted in mid-July, McCain is polling fourth behind rivals former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and actor Fred Thompson.
