Politicians typically make the rounds on Independence Day.

But this year, presidential candidates were in short supply in New Hampshire.

NHPR's David Darman has more.

Believe it or not, it was tough to find a real live presidential candidate in New Hampshire on July 4th.

Democratic Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico was here, marching in Amherst and Laconia.

Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter of California also stopped in.

But no other Democrats or Republicans spent the day in the Granite State.

Some campaigns said that's because their candidates were spending time in Iowa, the state with the nation's first caucus. New Hampshire, of course, has traditionally held the earliest presidential primary.

More local politicians did make the rounds on Independence Day. Governor John Lynch marched in Raymond before heading off to speak at a naturalization ceremony for 150 new citizens in Portsmouth.

Senator John Sununu also marched a few town parades.
