Congressman and Republican Presidential Candidate Duncan Hunter
By Laura Knoy on Wednesday, July 4, 2007.
He's a Vietnam veteran, the father of an Iraq War veteran, a California Congressman since 1980 and was the second Republican to jump into the race for President. Duncan Hunter bills himself as a "solid conservative" - he's for the war, for free trade, for a border fence with Mexico and against abortion. As he makes a campaign stop in the Granite State this holiday week, we'll talk with Congressman Hunter about where he stands on these and other issues, his run for the Republican nomination for President and how he distinguishes himself from the pack of other Republicans. Rep. Hunter accused those who favor withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq of wanting to retreat into "Fortress America." But then he spent most of the remainder of the program describing his plan to complete a double fence along the entire Mexican border, and then do the same with the Canadian border.
Hmm...
Rep. Hunter wants us to continue killing and dying in Iraq and he has his reasons for that belief, but he completely misunderstands those of us who want to end that enterprise.
There are many reasons to doubt the purpose and the chance for success of this war, beginning with the fact that congress, not having the nerve to declare war, possibly because they were fully aware that Iraq posed no threat to this country, completely abdicated its war powers responsibility and ceded the power to the president.
I consider this one of the most spineless and treacherous acts imaginable. If Rep. Hunter thinks that this is a justified war, he is free to make his case. Personally, I believe that his remarks are an attempt to evade the responsibility he has to justify this act by attacking the virtues of his opponents.
I am proud to be among those who oppose this sham. I am also pleased that there is a candidate who actually believes the constitution is the law of the land. Count me among the few supporters of liberty and constitutional government. Go Ron Paul!
