A new group that wants to make education a priority for all presidential candidates, opened its office in Manchester today.

NHPR correspondent Brian Early has details.

A broad coalition of educators, politicians and entrepreneurs gathered to kick off Education in 08.

The group, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, strives to put pressure on presidential candidates to detail their education plan.

Former Colorado governor and Los Angeles school superintendent Roy Romer heads the group.

"If we really care about our family, if we care about our standard of living and our children being the same as ours, if we care about an intellectual base in which we can understand the world we live in so we can avoid wars like Iraq and Vietnam, we've got to invest in education. That's what this campaign is about."

The group does not have any specific plans for improving education, but would rather facilitate an education discussion.
