Hundreds of people attended the funeral services Sunday for the man who killed a Franconia police officer 10 days ago and then was fatally shot himself.

NHPR Corresopndent Todd Wellington has the story.

Several hundred friends, family and neighbors stood in the pouring rain Sunday to remember 24 year old Liko Kenney.

The funeral service was held on the grounds of Kenney's family home in Easton.

Funeral organizers had said the event would be open to the public.

But on Sunday they barred access to members of the media.

Those attending said the service seemed to be influenced by Native American rituals.

The home is just a few hundred yards from the spot on Route 116 where Kenney shot and killed Corporal Bruce McKay on May 11th.

McKay had stopped Kenney for speeding.

A passing motorist then picked up the downed officer's gun and fatally shot Kenney.

At an indoor reception held following the funeral, neighbor Connie McKenzie was helping lay out the potluck buffet.

Mourners had delivered scores of flower arrangements to Kenney's family.

“We loved him... full of life, lots to say, he was very smart. If he was on to something like it was plants or animals he'd go on to you about it. He knew a lot about astronomy. Interesting to talk to. Interesting person."

It was clear that many in Franconia still have questions about how a traffic stop could explode so out of control.

They also question how the state and local authorities have handled the investigation of the shootings.

“We have questions, all right... questions for the Attorney General, questions for the Governor..."

That's Liko Kenney's uncle, William Kenney.

William Kenney said his nephew was simply not the bad person some had portrayed him.

"Liko was no Charlie Manson. Like was a man trying to get home. Liko was just a young man trying to make it home."

The man who was riding in the car with Liko Kenney when the shootings occurred was also at the reception.

21 year old Caleb McCauley says he lived with Kenney for the last two months.

He would say little about what actually happened that night.

But he did suggest there may be more to the story.

"Liko... even during this whole thing he was scared for his life. That's all I have to say about that... I'm just trying to get on with my life and make sure this never happens to anyone again, cause it all could have been prevented and it's a sad thing that people had to die. We're gonna make sure this never happens again and that's the one thing I'm gonna fight for."

Authorities have said the motorist that shot Liko Kenney - Gregory Floyd of Easton Hill - will not face charges.
