An endorsement by the state's largest newspaper

Did Joe Lieberman get a boost yesterday when The Union Leader ran a front page editorial endorsing his campaign?

I had posed the question of a Union Leader endorsement in the Democratic Primary on Sunday, when our local paper, The Telegraph, endorsed John Kerry. I wondered out loud whether an endorsement by the newspaper famous for making Ed Muskie cry would help or hurt a Democrat working to drum up voters in next Tuesday's primary.

Even Joe McQuaid, the newspaper's publisher, talked about what the endorsement could mean for Lieberman when he announced it on CSPAN the night before as part of their coverage of the Iowa Caucuses. He indicated that the paper gave its support to Lieberman because of the stands he had taken on the war and economy, and the endorsement was an effort to reach the more moderate independents and undecided Democrats.

As per their style, the endorsement ran as a Page One editorial in The Union Leader on Tuesday; with all the other campaigns now rolling back to New Hampshire after caucuses, it remains to be seen how often you'll see Lieberman's name on page one in the few days left before the Primary.
