Be Careful What You Say...
Be careful what you say
Happy 2004 and welcome to the Iowa count-down with only 12 days remaining until the caucus! In case folks in New Hampshire have not heard, we are experiencing the coldest days of the season facing wind chill factors upwards of 30 degrees below zero BUT the heat is on!
This past Monday, agency co-hosted a caucus training event in conjunction with several other national organizations and the local county Democratic and Republican parties. While a small group turned out, it was a great event for all. I must admit I learned a lot about the caucus process and how it differs between the two parties. What was most interesting is that I had 2 persons tell me they will temporarily change their party affilliation to attend the Democratic caucus because it sounded a lot more interactive and exciting! It made me wonder if others will do the same.
Only 2 persons out of the 12 Democrats professed (our should that be confessed) to have selected their candidate of choice. Most continue to wait until the last moment to declare a candidate. This is much different than the last presidential caucus process! Most of them are torn between the candidate that reflects their beliefs and principles and the candidate that they believe could fairly compete with President Bush.
And now today, the news breaks about Dean and sharing of his belief that the Iowa Caucus does not quite work. As proud Iowans, that probably was not such a good thing to say. At lunch, 2 persons said that finalized their decision and it was not to move to his corner caucus night! Oh, if only we could all think that everything we say (and unfortunately even more so for those that get into print), could one day come back to haunt us!
