Not Working

The DEBATES. Talk about a format that's not working. The coffee-machine scuttle coming out of the WMUR debate is mostly the frustration we're feeling about how little we really learned about how well any of the 85 candidates will serve us as President. There wasn't enough time for anybody to say much more than their soundbite mantras. Koppel tried to be provocative and get them out of their scripted, rehearsed responses, but I don't think much happened to change anything. These debates among so many candidates do very little to help voters make up their minds. I've got to believe its frustrating for the candidates too.

I'm reluctant to attribute much of anything to the debate other than these vacuous observations: Dean didn't really need to show up because he didn't have a chance to say anything--Koppel and the others said it for him, and, Kerry looked (and sounded) the most presidential--he got the few good questions. How's that for substance.
