I got to wondering about the Teamster endorsement of Gephardt

For as long as I have known and been hanging around with this group of Teamsters I have always heard " . . . we never endorse a candidate in a Primary election . . ." Yet this year they came out early and strong in support if Gephardt - I know that the other candidates have talked to the local membership here in New Hampshire and I am sure to Mr. Hoffa himself.

At any rate, I asked my Teamster friends this question: What if Gephardt does not win the Democratic nomination? Granted it was at a table at Billy's Sports Bar here in Manchester but the consensus from a small group was that they will ultimately back whichever Democratic candidate that wins as they do not want George Bush to stay in the White House.

I also asked who their second choice might have been and who would they absolutely not support. The discussion was lively but from what I could extract I think Kerry and/or Dean would have been the next best choices - Beyond that the candidates they would not have come out for are Sharpton - and one guy actually said " . . and not that woman that is running." They also said that Clark may not be favored as his background is strictly military - something about him having only known the military (housing, no taxes, etc.) not what it is like to be a regular working class American -

As for me I still don't know who I will be voting for

The critical issue is how

The critical issue is how early and how proudly the Teamsters endorsed Gephardt. The passion that Teamsters have for beating Bush and for healthcare found outlet in only one candidate: Dick Gephardt.

The key is not the "What if?" scenario, but a "Wow."
