Lit drops, door to door and the Dean Dilemma:
This weekend a couple of the campaigns conducted door to door campaigns and lit drops around the state. This is the true grassroots activity that the national press expect from the NH primary. From a campaign standpoint, I can tell you they are a huge pain in the neck. My worst memories of campaigns past all (ok, mostly) revolve around lit drops and door to door efforts. Their staff should be thankful for nice weather and now pray that no one else at the campaign has the bright idea that next time they could do 50,000 houses!
As I drove to work on Friday I saw another staple of grassroots campaigns, the Dean campaign was doing a standout in front of NH Public Radio as their man was inside taping an interview. How does Dean continue to maintain expectations when they are really way out of whack? A Boston Globe poll on Sunday has Dean leading Kerry in MASSACHUSETTS! I know Eric believes in Iowa that Deans numbers are starting to settle down into a normal range. But Dean leading in Massachusetts? How do you explain that one? Last week new poll numbers had Dean still leading by 20 in NH. Expect the campaigns to start the rhetoric on finishing a solid third in NH being an impressive showing with two local guys. Can someone please tell me what a respectful third looks like?
