"Fasten Your Seat Belt"
Autumn arrives today. Deer and pheasant seasons are just around the corner, but it's been open season on the President and his policies for months.
That's typical in the year leading up to the Iowa caucuses as candidates from the party out of power gang up on the current officeholder. This year, 10 candidates are relentlessly taking their best shots at President Bush as they attempt to break from the pack.
All indications are that former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean and Congressman Dick Gephardt are in a dead heat, but the buzz has been about Dean's rise from the low single digits to frontrunner status here and nationally.
Here's the bottom line in Iowa: Gephardt can't afford to lose here, Dean can't afford to peak too soon or he goes from frontrunner to flash in the pan, and Sen. John Kerry's campaign will be DOA in New Hampshire if he finishes out of the top three. Bette Davis might as well have been talking to my Democratic friends when she said, ''Fasten your seat belt. It's going to be a bumpy ride''
