Republican John McCain has officially entered the 2008 presidential race with a kickoff speech in Portsmouth.

New Hampshire Public Radio's Josh Rogers reports.

With the Naval Shipyard as his backdrop, McCain spoke in Prescott Park for twenty minutes.

He stressed his experience in the military and in Washington. Describing his public career as that of an imperfect servant, the Arizona Senator promised to bring a clear-eyed view to issues ranging from Social Security to global terrorism:

"I know how the world works. I know the good and the evil in it. I know how to work with leaders who share our dreams of a freer, safer and a more prosperous world, and how to stand up to those who don't."

McCain's speech came as part of a four-day swing through early primary states. McCain had been the presumptive front-runner in the race for GOP nomination, but now trails former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani in polls and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in fundraising.
