UNH Musical Theatre Showcase
By Cheryl Senter on Friday, November 24, 2006.
This is the time of the year for college midterms. For some at the University of New Hampshire, midterms took the form of participating in the Musical Theatre Showcase held at the Hennessy Theatre earlier this month. Theatre and Dance students performed, directed, designed, and choreographed pieces including original works for their peers, teachers and family members.
Back stage excitement. (Cheryl Senter, NHPR) (piano intro to song) Listen baby to my plea...won't you come dancing with me... (back stage sounds of students vocally prepping for their songs) Does everybody know what they are doing for their set-up? (back stage singing) I'm a student here double majoring in Musical theatre and education - I have two characters I'm playing. The first one is that I'm dressed up with the belly is Gooch's Song and she's pregnant and the second is from Purlie with the song Purlie. I'm not nervous (laughing). (Sounds of Gooch's Song being performed)
Newfangled Preacher Man. (Cheryl Senter, NHPR) I'm singing a song called 'On the other side of the tracks' from Little Me. It's a play by Neil Simon and Cy Coleman wrote the music. It's a about a girl who's poor and all she wants in life is wealth social status and culture because she falls in love with this rich kid and she kinda follows him around for most of her life. It's a cute song and I like the show a lot. (piano music and applause) (several students talking at once) Oh man we're just elated now that it is over! We just finished a number where one of the girls had lost her voice and so we were all really worried that she wasn't going to be able to perform and all. We hadn't heard her sing in a few days. She went out there and gave it her all - that was the best thing and the audience loved it! A bunch of people knew that she was sick so she really belted it out, gave it to them. (back stage sounds of students prepping, singing their songs) I'm 21 years old and I'm a senior here at UNH. I'm graduating this semester. I'm from Los Angeles California actually. This is my last Musical Theatre Showcase here at UNH. I'm singing 'Newfangled Preacher Man' from the musical Purlie. It's a nice rousing number. It will be a fun way to go out here. (onstage sounds of 'Newfangled Preacher Man' and applause) |
