Police officers in Manchester and across the state are mourning the loss of one of their own.

Officer Michael Briggs lost his battle for life Tuesday afternoon, after being shot in the head Monday morning.

NHPR Correspondent Debra Daigle reports the attorney general is pursuing the death penalty for Briggs' alleged killer:

Outside the Manchester Police Department Tuesday, fire crews used a boom truck to hang purple and black mourning bunting in memory of 35 year old Michael Briggs.

Briggs was shot Monday morning in the line of duty, on Lincoln Street in Manchester.

Inside police headquarters, Attorney General Kelly Ayotte announced that her office will seek the ultimate punishment for the suspect:

"I intend to upgrade the charges and seek a charge of capital murder against Michael Addison, for causing the death of Officer Michael Briggs."

The 26 year old Addison was arrested in Dorchester, Massachusetts late Monday, after a fifteen hour search. He has said he will fight extradition, but AG Ayotte promises that with the help of the Suffolk County attorney's office, her office will get Addison back to New Hampshire as soon as possible.

As a former AAG myself, I have some serious concerns about the Griggs murder and NH AG Kelly Ayotte.

Feel free to take a look at those concerns right here, where I note her selective enforcement of the Law, and failure to follow the rules of Evidence and Civil Procedure, costing NH Taxpayers buckets of money in the process. Let's hope she does a better job in this case.
