This project started with the basic idea from John Rudolph that there ought to be an interesting story to tell about a school with a very diverse population in a very homogeneous state. Rudolph and NHPR’s Jon Greenberg turned that idea into a project proposal and with the generous support of the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation - Manchester Region, the project was made possible.

The staff at Manchester Central, John Rist the principal, and June Tumblin, head of the English Language Learner program, gave the producers carte blanche to come into the school, spend time in any classroom and work with any student. This openness showed enormous trust and NHPR is extremely grateful.

This project is unusual for radio in that it includes a significant effort to tell the story of Manchester Central in pictures. Photographer Geoff Forester was part of the documentary from the beginning and his photo essays are a powerful complement to the voices heard in the radio elements.

Culture Lessons was awarded an Edward R. Murrow award in News Documentary for Region 10, and first place in the 2006 Best Documentary category by the New Hampshire Associated Press Broadcasters Association. In June 2007, Culture Lessons won a RTNDA/UNITY Award.
