The favorite candidate of outgoing Executive Councilor Ruth Griffin lost in his bid for the republican nomination to seek her seat.

NHPR Correspondent Roger Wood reports.

Sean Mahoney of Portsmouth listened intently as the last returns trickled in from the District 3 towns.

In the end, the approximately 400 vote deficit prompted a concession to Salem State Senator Chuck Morse.

Mahoney: "Well, you know, it was a tough loss. I'm obviously disappointed that we weren't able to pull it out. But, now it's time for all of us to get together as Republicans and rally around the nominee and make sure we keep the seat Republican coming forward in November."

Mahoney said he was surprised by the low turnout for the election, and that his first order of business is taking down the many political signs that sprouted for his failed candidacy.

As far as Mahoney's political future, he said he would evaluate it later on.
