Bishop John McCormack
By Laura Knoy on Friday, August 18, 2006.
Bishop John McCormack joins us for a one-on-one interview about the Catholic Diocese of Manchester, which covers the state of New Hampshire. Churches are closing, parishes merging and some Catholics are upset. The Diocese says it understands well their feelings, but the moves are all part of an ongoing re-configuration, reflecting priest shortages felt here and nationwide. Laura's guest is Bishop John McCormack of the Diocese of Manchester.

As someone who has participated in CYO, Sir Galahad, and Pilgrim Fellowship with sports. Couldn't more be done with sports at all levels. Good luck Bishop M!!!- Sincerely, John Gray
I was the first caller, and fully expected the bishop to ignore his past history of likely prosecutable criminal complicity in the Boston priest abuse scandal (words taken from MA AG Reilly`s grand jury report); of course, he evaded those charges, and called them "mistakes". My claim is that many Catholics consider his record of conspiracy has caused a lack of trust in him, and in the church.
My first question regarding whether or not church law considers cover-up and conspiracy of sexual abuse to be a mortal sin was totally evaded.
My second question was asking if his request (for us all to forgive him) was for his failure to notify authorities of the 17 preditor priests which he covered-up for while in Boston, while at the same time failing to protect all those abused children. Again, he only admitted making mistakes", and forgiveness for those "mistakes" was being asked. For you, me, and most everyone else, those "mistakes" are civil law criminal acts, and grave sins against Jesus and church teachings.
It is sheer hypocrisy for the bishop and Catholic leadership to call for immediate removal of abusive priests, but to omit themselves within church laws from penalties of their failure to the acknowledge their actions, and submit to penalty/penance for them, such as they have placed upon the priests and others.
