A question that has bugged

A question that has bugged me for years. 3 years ago, in the playoffs against Oakland, Mark Ellis missed the plate on a play at home, as Varitek missed the ball and went to chase it down. Instead of going back and tagging the plate, Ellis pushed Varitek. Since the ball was live and the play was still going on, why wasn't Ellis immediately out for interference? No one mentioned this afterwards, yet it seemed obvious that Ellis should have been out. Am I missing something?
