Rain continued to fall today in Manchester. There, the Merrimack River was nearly nine feet over flood level yesterday and threatened the historic millyard. NHPR Correspondent Debra Daigle reports.
(water sounds)
The sound of huge water pumps dominate the waterfront mill buildings in Manchester, now home to dozens of businesses ranging from restaurants to computer firms.
Aaron Cirottes, owner of Cafe 324 on Canal Street, says several of his neighbors were forced to close after getting up to eight feet of water in their basements. And although he somehow avoided flooding, his business suffered nonetheless:
"A lot of our clientele comes from the surrounding mill buildings around us, and with a lot of these buildings closed because of no power and flooding, we've taken a pretty substantial hit financially, as far as our daily sales go right now."
Several of the businesses forced to close won't be able to re-open until at least the end of the week.
