New Hampshire Governor John Lynch has declared a state of emergency after a weekend of heavy rain and flooding.

More than seven inches of rain have caused Governor John Lynch to declare the emergency.

And he's activated 400 members of the National Guard.

Governor Lynch says he's taken these steps because the rain has caused widespread damage.

"Lots of roads have been closed, lots of roads have been washed away, and there are ongoing evacuations."

Officials have evacuated dozens of people in two communities, where dams were judged to be in danger of failing.

The National Weather Service has also issued a flood warning for many of the state's rivers, which are swelling to the point of overflowing.

Forecasters predict the rain will continue through Monday night.
