In Washington, politicians are debating whether the US presence in Iraq is inflaming or calming the almost daily violence in that country. This week NHPR presents the views of people who have spent significant time in Iraq.

New Hampshire National Guardsman Ray Valas lives in Bow. He served in Iraq for one year as an Infantry Company Commander for about 250 soldiers.
Staff Sergeant George Sprague spent most of 2004 in Iraq. He's 30 years old and a member of the National Guard who lives in Hillsborough. He experienced Iraq as a truck driver in military convoys.
Embedded reporter Doug Grindle files reports for television stations all across the country. He spent 20 weeks in Iraq this year- his most recent visit was this fall.
Cliff Kindy is a member of several Christian Peacemaker Teams. He's spent five months every year of the last three years in Iraq.
