Forty Years After A Murder, New Twist Could Set Man Free

On the night of February 27^th, 1971, dressed in a vintage fur coat, Susan Randall, met up with a friend for pizza. After leaving the restaurant, shortly after midnight, a woman fitting Randall's description was observed hitchhiking near Manchester’s Granite Square. Witnesses say a white car driven by a lone man stopped to pick her up.

Randall’s body, badly beaten and naked from the waist down, would be found two days later, thrown from a bridge onto the frozen Merrimack River in Concord.

N.H. Couple Injured In Marathon Bombing Dealing With Medical Costs, Mental Impact

A month after the Boston Marathon bombings, a Nashua husband and wife injured in the blast are raising money for mounting medical costs.

But they are also still dealing with the psychological impact of the tragedy.

After the Boston Marathon bombing, Martha Galvis lost the ring finger on her left hand and nearly had to have her left leg amputated.

She’s had four surgeries on her hand and is due for a fifth next week.

Outgoing N.H. Attorney General Takes Position In Private Practice

Outgoing New Hampshire Attorney General Michael Delaney is taking a position with the McLane Law Firm.

Delaney will join the firm later this month as a director in the litigation practice group.

McLane’s Managing Partner Dick Samuels said Delaney brings extensive litigation and government experience to regulatory and compliance matters at the firm.

House Supercommittee Narrowly Rejects Senate-Passed Casino Bill

Members of the so-called casino supercommittee spent its morning getting familiar with 17 separate amendments. The proposals ranged from beefing up regulatory oversight, to changing the way casino proceeds would be distributed among towns and counties, to allowing slot machines at any establishment that holds a liquor license.

But when the committee reconvened after lunch, the first motion came quickly, and it was to kill the bill.

“We may be 45 very bright people, but not one of us has a background in gaming.”

Joint House Committee Votes 23-22 To Kill Casino Bill

By a single vote, a special joint House committee has recommended killing a bill that would legalize a casino in New Hampshire.

Keene Sues 'Robin Hood' Group That Fills Parking Meters, Videotapes Officers

The city of Keene filed a lawsuit this month against a group of people they say are harassing officers handing out parking tickets.

They call themselves Robin Hood of Keene.

They fill parking meters set to expire and videotape officers as they fill out parking tickets.

But city officials say the group has been harassing the parking enforcement officers.

John MacLean is Keene’s city manager.

He says the officers are beleaguered and must be able to do their jobs.

Fallen Greenland Police Chief's Name Added To National Memorial

Fallen Greenland Police Chief Michael Maloney’s name was added to the National Law Enforcement Memorial at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. this morning.

Officers from the Greenland Police Department were in the nation’s capital Wednesday morning to attend the National Peace Officers Memorial Service.

President Barack Obama was the keynote speaker.

He encouraged people not to wait until tragedy strikes to thank first responders for their service.

State Unemployment Rate Dips To 5.5%

New Hampshire’s unemployment rate in April fell to 5.5%, down from 5.7% in March, according to new data from N.H. Employment Security.

During the month, the state’s economy added 3,400 jobs, with some of the biggest gains in construction and retail.

Local and state government shed an estimated 1,000 jobs during the period.

The national unemployment rate stands at 7.5%.

Senate Urged To Exclude Tips From Business Enterprise Taxes

Hospitality industry advocates are urging lawmakers to exempt employee tips from being calculated into business enterprise taxes.

Adrienne Rupp with the Business and Industry Association says the push back is in response to a rule change by the Department of Revenue Administration.

“Where they have begun applying the BET, the business enterprise tax, to tips earned by employees.”

Funding, Access Issues For Programs Serving Returning Troops

First District Congresswoman Carol-Shea Porter joined a roundtable discussion Tuesday on veterans and military families at New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord.

The discussion focused on the needs of New Hampshire’s returning troops and their families and services available to them.

Representative Shea-Porter says she’s worked to make sure they have the benefits they need, but says nonprofit organizations are critical to helping troops transition once back home.

Estimated Tax Revenues Continue To Stir Budget Debate In Senate

While work on the state’s next two year budget continues in the Senate, the Medicaid Enhancement Tax (MET), a levy on hospital revenue, still sits in the spotlight.

MET collection is $34 million short of estimates for this fiscal year. In Monday's Senate Finance Committee meeting, lawmakers expressed concern about overly optimistic forecasts for the next two year cycle.
