New Hampshire Soldiers Training Afghan Police

By Douglas Grindle on Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

Coalition military officials say a daylong battle today in southern Afghanistan's poppy-growing region has killed more than 60 Taliban fighters.

In a statement, the coalition says the clash started when dozens of insurgents attacked with machine guns, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades. One coalition soldier was killed and four wounded in the battle, but there were no immediate reports of civilian deaths or injuries.

Meanwhile in Afghanistan's northern provinces, where the conflict is much quieter, New Hampshire National Guard soldiers are training local police forces.

One of those soldiers is Sergeant 1st Class, Shannon Kulakowski from Nottingham, New Hampshire. Before this assignment, Kulakowski was with the Guard's 172nd Mountain Regiment.

He describes his current mission in Afghanistan to NHPR Correspondent Doug Grindle at a base in Mazur e Sharif.

The High School Experience

By Liz Bulkley on Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

Tonight on the Front Porch, we're re-living the high school experience. Teacher Nathan Graziano has a new book of poetry that puts all the usual high school caricatures under the microscope, from the popular jocks to the dazed stoners to the overly nostalgic lit instructors. His book, Teaching Metaphors, tries to go "beyond the lesson plans…to probe the humanity of the modern high school." He'll share some of his work with us, and we'll hear an assortment of stories from the hallowed halls.

Former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona

By Laura Knoy on Tuesday, September 25, 2007.

From 2002 to 2006, Richard Carmona served as our country’s 17th U.S. Surgeon General, educating Americans on the importance of preparing for natural and other disasters, the dangers of secondhand smoke, and the disparities in our country on diseases such as AIDS and diabetes. Today Richard Carmona is on a mission to raise public awareness of Chronic Disease, and he's in New Hampshire this week to get that issue on the presidential primary radar. We’ll talk about that – and, Carmona’s recent public statements – that as Surgeon General, he was often barred from speaking on controversial health issues like stem cell research and sex education.
