An Injured Worker Finds His Status Denies Him Workers Compensation CoverageBy David Darman on Wednesday, August 29, 2007.Last month, a construction worker at Hinsdale’s fifteen million dollar school construction project was injured on the job. But since he had agreed to work the job as an independent, he was not covered by the contractor’s worker’s compensation. The state’s labor unions point to this case as an illustration of how some contractors deliberately misclassify their workers to avoid paying workers comp. And the unions are trying to get the state to crack down on these misclassifications, especially in publicly funded projects like the one in Hinsdale. But from a political perspective –the neighboring communities are quite different. Rye has the highest percentage of registered Republicans of any Seacoast community -- 37%. State Releases Reports on Schools' ProgressBy Mark Bevis on Tuesday, August 28, 2007.New Hampshire's Department of Education has released the Adequate Yearly Progress reports for the state's public schools. The reports are required by the Federal No Child Left Behind Act to allow the public to see how well the state's schools are performing.
