The Big Dig: After the Accident, the Inspections Continue

By Shannon Mullen on Friday, July 6, 2007.

One year ago next week, a three ton concrete panel fell from the ceiling of a Big Dig tunnel in Boston.

It killed a woman from Jamaica Plain on her way to Logan Airport.

Then Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney promised an “exhaustive” inspection of the entire Big Dig.

And the state is still fixing problems found after the ceiling collapse.

But as NHPR Correspondent Shannon Mullen reports, engineers are expecting to find more problems as they expand their review to the rest of the Metropolitan Highway System.

Marlow Makes History - Its First Prez Candidate Stops By

By Xenia Piaseckyj on Friday, July 6, 2007.

The town that Presidential campaigns forgot made history yesterday.

Last month, NHPR Correspondent Shannon Mullen reported that as far as anyone could remember, no presidential candidate had ever come to Marlow.

William Taft was supposed to stop by back in 1912, but, as the story goes, he missed his turn and got lost.

Apparently, Bill Richardson's campaign heard Shannon's story and decided to make history.

The New Mexico Democrat stopped by the southwest New Hampshire town on Thurday.

Mary Blank, the President of the Marlow Historical Society, attended the event and says everyone seemed to have a good time.

Lucky Number 7

By Andrew Walsh on Friday, July 6, 2007.

Tomorrow's going to be a busy day for folks in the wedding industry. Brides and Grooms are lining up to get married on July Seventh – or 7/7/07. We'll talk with a scholar of history and religion to find out why certain numbers carry certain significance in different cultures. Despite some faith in lucky digits, Americans are less likely to let numbers guide their lives than folks from other parts of the world. We'll talk with David Frankfurter to find out why. He's professor of History and Religious Studies at the University of New Hampshire. He's also author of several books. His latest is Evil Incarnate: Rumors of Demonic Conspiracy and Satanic Abuse in History

We'll hear from a guy who's trying to turn his luck around in the bingo hall. Producer Jon Keesecker brings us a story of luck and perseverance. This piece comes to us from the Public Radio Exchange.

A Letter from Iraq: Staff Sgt. William Dow

By Mark Bevis on Friday, July 6, 2007.

It's Friday, the day we check in with the men and women from the New Hampshire National Guard serving in Iraq.

Members of the 36-43rd Company have been in Iraq guarding a detention center in Baghdad since late last year.

Some of the soldiers are actually guarding inmates, others have supportive roles.

NHPR's Mark Bevis spoke with Staff Sergeant William Dow.

Dow lives in Merrimack with his wife and two stepchildren. He works full time for the Guard in Concord as a computer guy.

He does the same job in Baghdad.
