Running Into the Future

By Dan Gorenstein on Thursday, March 29, 2007.

Something unusual is happening at the University of New Hampshire.

A bumper crop of football players led by wide receiver David Ball have attracted the attention of professional football scouts.

Last week a dozen scouts put the athletes through a battery of tests.

Friday the scouts return to see how well defensive cornerback Corey Graham performs.

New Hampshire Public Radio's Dan Gorenstein reports these three hour sessions could be players' first taste of the big time or the closest they ever come.

This story was named 2007 Best Sports Special by the New Hampshire Associated Press Broadcasters Association.

The 2007 RPM Challenge

By Liz Bulkley on Thursday, March 29, 2007.

For the second year in a row, The Wire magazine dared musicians to do the seemingly impossible: Write, record and produce an album in just one month. They call it The RPM Challenge, and the response was overwhelming. While last year's competition focused on local musicians, this year, participants from all over the world took part. Tonight, we'll talk to two organizers behind the event, and we'll hear a broad sampling of the music that it spawned.

Our guests are:

  • Dave Karlotski, publisher of The Wire and a founding organizer of the RPM Challenge.
  • Chris Griener, musician and organizer of the RPM Challenge. His musical projects include Northern and Foxlove.

"A Dash of Style"

By Laura Knoy on Thursday, March 29, 2007.

Short and practical, this book- the first of its kind for creative writers- shows authors the benefits that can be reaped from mastering punctuation: the art of style, sentence length, meaning, and economy of words. With full-length chapters devoted to each of the major punctuation marks, this is a great book for anyone looking to make punctuation their friend instead of their mysterious foe. Laura's guest is Noah Lukeman, best-selling author whose latest book is "A Dash of Style: The Art and Mastery of Punctuation".

New Hampshire's Social Capital Exceeds Nation

By Amy Quinton on Thursday, March 29, 2007.

A new national survey shows that New Hampshire exceeds the nation when it comes to social capital.
Social capital refers to social networks and the levels of trust, cooperation, political engagement and the group activities that come from these networks.
Lewis Feldstein is the President of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, which helped fund the study.
He described the basic findings to NHPR's Amy Quinton.

Feldstein says research shows people living in communities with high social capital are likely to be happier, healthier and have longer life expectancy.
