"Stand-up Poet" Jack McCarthy

By Liz Bulkley on Friday, January 19, 2007.

Jack McCarthy calls himself a "stand-up" poet. He's something of a legend in the Boston open-mic scene, where he got his start late in life. His poems are marked with blunt, straightforward language, and they're likely to make his audience both laugh and cry. He lives in Washington now, but he was on the East Coast last Fall for a series of readings. He joined us on the Front Porch to talk about his work and to share some of it with us.

Today we'll look at our relations with Europe, how they've altered and how we may need to change up rules to our relationship to remain allies in the future. Laura's guest is Sarwar Kashmeri, Vermont-based Strategic Communications Advisor, Business Columnist and Author of "America and Europe after 9/11 and Iraq: The Great Divide."

Should the State Lease Its Cannon?

By Todd Wellington on Friday, January 19, 2007.

Governor Lynch is planning to go skiing this weekend up at Cannon Mountain.

He wants to draw attention to the fact that the slopes are open even though this has been one of the warmest winters in history.

But Cannon Mountain is the subject of plenty of discussion in Franconia these days without the Governor's visit.

A bill before the State Legislature would require the State lease operations of Cannon Mountain Ski Area to a private company.

NHPR Correspondent Todd Wellington has the story.
