America in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Years

By NHPR Staff on Monday, January 15, 2007.

The Exchange takes a break today to bring you a special program for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. It's been eight years in the making, but Pulitzer-prize winning historian Taylor Branch has finally finished his third and final volume covering America during the Martin Luther King years--It's called "At Canaan's Edge" and it was worth the wait. Using LBJ's White house tapes and even J. Edgar Hoover's infamous wire taps, Branch delved deep to reveal the personalities and principles driving America's landmark changes during the tumultuous Civil Rights era. Then, host Mike Cuthbert talks with Professor Robert Weiss about something we all think about, but don't know what to expect from--retirement. How to deal with the emotional and financial changes of life after work...on this Prime Time Radio.
