Turkish Delight Sales Jump After Narnia Chronicles

By Susan Reilly on Friday, February 17, 2006.

The movie, The Chronicles of Narnia, based on CS Lewis's acclaimed novels, is up for several Academy Awards this year.

It's been nominated for best sound mixing, best visual effects and best make-up.

But it's not up for best candy for the role Turkish Delight plays in the film.

That may be because the exotic sweet seems to be an acquired taste.

Still, as NHPR Correspondent Susan Reilly reports, a New Hampshire candy distributor is seeing sales of Turkish Delight go through the roof and it's not clear why.

Ice Fishing / America at War

By Liz Bulkley on Friday, February 17, 2006.

The line between ice fishing and regular fishing may seem a little blurred this winter. All the warm weather has kept the states' lakes from freezing over as much as they usually do. But despite some areas of open water, this weekend's big ice fishing derby is set to begin. We'll talk to seasoned Winnipesaukee fisherman Harold Lyon about the conditions and whether they're affecting his sport. Harold is author of the book Angling in the Smile of the Great Spirit: Six Centuries of Wisdom from the Master Anglers of Lake Winnipesaukee.

We'll also talk with Jack Resch about how war and the preparation for war has helped shape the U-S identity since the country's birth. Jack is a Professor of History at the University of New Hampshire Manchester and Editor in Chief of Americans at War: Society, Culture and the Homefront. The set of encyclopedias were recently named best reference books of the year by a division of the American Library Association.

Today on the Exchange, we’ll look at how Granite Staters are adapting to the new program, and if the D might end up meaning "discounts" or "disaster". Laura's guests are Dr. Charlotte Yeh, Regional Administrator for the Boston Regional Office of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Geoffrey Souther, Director, Office of the Commissioner for New Hampshire's Health and Human Service Department. Wendy Dumais, Prescription Assistance Program Coordinator for Concord Hospital and Roger Hebert, Owner of Rice's Pharmacy in Nashua.
