Bill Challenges Housing Park Coop Model

By Dan Gorenstein on Tuesday, January 24, 2006.

Manufactured housing parks are a viable source of affordable housing for many in New Hampshire.

Across the state when parks have come up for sale, often tenants have purchased the communities and converted them into resident-owned cooperatives.

The legislature is considering a bill that opponents fear would undercut tenants' ability to buy those parks.

Companies Could Face Health Insurance Requirements

By Kerry Grens on Tuesday, January 24, 2006.

Legislatures around the country are proposing bills to make large companies pay more for their employees’ health benefits.

And New Hampshire has jumped on the bandwagon.

A bill in the House would require companies with more than fifteen hundred employees devote eight percent of their payroll expenses on health insurance.

The proposal is often dubbed the Walmart bill, because in the first state to pass it, Walmart was the only company affected.

But companies in New Hampshire say that even if stores like Walmart are the target, many could feel the impact.

New Hampshire Public Radio’s Kerry Grens has more.

Walkable Communities Slideshow

Many cities and towns across the country and New Hampshire are making efforts to become more walkable, where everything from shops to resturants to entertainment to town greenspace is a close walk away from home. As part of The Exchange's look at walkable communities, NHPR's Keith Shields took a walking tour of downtown Keene, considered a model for "walkability" in New Hampshire.
