State's Timber Industry Sees Renewed Interest

High price gas and heating oil have driven up the demand for firewood as people look for more economical ways to heat their homes.

Jason Stock is the director of the Timberland Owners Association.

He tells NHPR's Mark Bevis that after a couple of years of hard times, happy days may be here again for the state's timber industry.

Old Growth Forests Do Exist in New Hampshire

About 83-percent of New Hampshire is covered in forest.
But it wasn’t always that way.
In the 19th century, much of the state’s forests were cleared for farming or timber.
So finding ancient forests, called old-growth forests, is rare.
New Hampshire Public Radio’s Amy Quinton set out with forestry experts to discover these hidden trees.

A Divine Family Comedy

Playwright Marisa Smith and director Faith Catlin have dusted off Dante to create the play "The Divine Family Comedy" with Signal and Noise Productions in Thetford, Vt. The story takes place in a New England town and centers around one wife's efforts to wrest her husband from the thrall of a demonic graduate student. We'll talk with them about their project.
