Top federal officials were in Manchester today (Wednesday) to promote local efforts to get people signed up for the new Medicare drug benefit.
The start date for the prescription drug plan—called Part D—is January 2006.
Organizations around the state have work underway to tackle the daunting task of informing the one hundred eighty thousand people eligible for the benefit.
New Hampshire Public Radio’s Kerry Grens has more.

This fall, New Hampshire students in grades three through eight will take a new state test.
The test is called the New England Common Assessment Program or NECAP.
It's a result of the No Child Left Behind Law.

While New Hampshire's transportation officials have been working on upcoming projects like the E-Z Pass system and the Insterstate 93 widening, historian James Garvin has been looking back. We'll talk with him about the earliest highway systems in the state and how they still affect modern travel and culture. Garvin is the author of "On the Road North of Boston: New Hampshire Taverns and Turnpikes 1700-1900". We'll also talk with inventor Russ Lanoie, who spends his lots of his time maintaining dirt roads around Maine and New Hampshire.

From T.V. ads to house parties, lobbying groups are mobilizing and weighing in on who should be the next Supreme Court Justice. We'll look at their issues, their approach, and how effective they've been in the past, and may be this time around. Laura is joined by Jeff Smith, Visiting Instructor in the Department of Government at Dartmouth College, and Trevor Parry-Giles, Professor in the Deparment of Communications at the University of Maryland, with a special focus in the Supreme Court nomination process. We will also hear from Chuck Douglas, former New Hampshire Congressman, former New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice, and now with the organization Progress for America, and Liza Dube, Policy Director for NARAL New Hampshire.

Rochester School Grapples With No Child Left Behind Rules : While lawmakers in Washington debate over reauthorizing the law, one school in Rochester pays the consequences of failing to meet NCLB's benchmarks.
State Releases Reports on Schools' Progress: More than half of the state's public schools didn't make Adequate Yearly Progress as measured by the federal law. Small Schools Can't Afford NCLB: For small schools where teachers assume many responsiblities, No Child Left Behind is causing belt tightening. 
The Exchange NCLB Coverage
The Impact of No Child Left Behind on New Hampshire: 191 schools in New Hampshire are in need of some form of improvement, according to the recent release of Adequate Yearly Progress reports as required under the federal No Child Left Behind Law. Two school districts, Manchester and Rochester, were pegged as needing "corrective action" and will have the state education department play more of a direct role in helping them to improve. We'll see what these results mean for the Granite State as well as how well NCLB is working for our schools and school districts. No Child Left Behind Turns Five: President Bush's signature domestic achievement turned five this year and is up for reauthorization in Congress. We'll look at what kind of response this major education reform effort has had over the years and where it stands now in terms of being reauthorized, including new legislation just introduced by more than 50 Republican members of the U.S. House and Senate that would allow states to opt out of the testing mandates and could have a major impact on the law. Holding School Accountability Accountable: With educators needing to complete yearly school progress reports, yearly student reports, and personalized student plans, some worry that too much accountability is leading to too little educating.
