Childhood in Wartime

Silvie Frere was a child when World War II broke out in Europe. Her father served in the French Army while her siblings and mother stayed in Zurich. Her observations of what took place during those years reflect an uncommon innocence and keeness. She's the author of "Beethoven's Eighth," an account of her experiences before emigrating to the U.S. at age 24.
