State Board of Education Approves New Standards

The State Board of Education today voted five to one in favor of new education standards for all public schools.
The final draft of the minimum standards will now go to the legislature for approval.
Some of the biggest items in the original proposal were not approved -- including requiring smaller class sizes and requiring that all districts offer Kindergarten by 2007.

Crystal Meth

It hasn't made much of a splash here in New Hampshire yet, but the drug still has Granite State authorities worried. We'll talk about how meth has traveled across the country, popping up everywhere from rural towns to urban cities, and why it's so addictive and dangerous. Laura is joined by Joe Harding, director of alcohol and drug policy for the state, and Ray McGarty, director of Southeastern New Hampshire Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services. We will also hear from Stephen Dnistrian, Executive Vice President at Partnership for A Drug-Free America.

Voices Against Violence

More than 14,000 people in New Hampshire sought help from domestic and sexual violence crisis centers in the year. One of them was a Plymouth woman, who went to Voices Against Violence after leaving her abuser and found emotional support, shelter and help with resources so she could stay safe.

Upper Valley Music Center

Alliance for Community Supports

Jess from Manchester was having trouble in high school because of anxiety issues. When the Alliance for Community Supports found an internship for Jess at a farm, where she found something she loved. She's now preparing to study for a career working with animals and feels confident about the future.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester

Preston Lawrence is a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Manchester. He takes time to have fun and be a role model for a young man whose father is in prison.

Christa McAuliffe Planetarium

Vinnie Devino worked in the Apollo Program as a designer. Now retired, he volunteers at the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium to pass on what he learned and to inspire kids to take an active interest in astronomy, space and aeronautics.

Childhood Cancer Lifeline

Maureen Hade of Manchester was trying to help her son Dane through difficult cancer treatment. She found support in talking with a Childhood Cancer Lifeline volunteer who knew what she was going through. Dane is seven now, and knows he's a survivor.

Lutheran Social Services

Adam Smith of Concord had to leave his native Liberia because of violence. Lutheran Social Services helped him find an apartment, a job and other necessities on his arrival.
