ArchivesNew England Sports FanaticsBy Laura Knoy on Friday, February 4, 2005.New England sports fans are finding themselves in a peculiar situation- their teams are winning! The once cursed Red Sox have won a World Series and the Patriots, once the laughingstock of the NFL, are going to their third Super Bowl in four years this weekend. We'll look at what it means to be a sports fan in New England and whether that has changed in recent years with all the success of our teams. And, we'll look at the generational gap between fans- those long time fans used to angst and loss and those new fans who have only seen championship teams. Laura's guests are Chris Ryan, host of "The Penalty Box" on WTPL Radio, a show that covers everything from the Patriots and Red Sox to the Bruins, Celtics and Dartmouth Big Green. He's also a sports writer for the Eagle Times in Massachusetts and has covered many sporting events including the Super Bowl, the Stanley Cup Finals and the World Series. Also joining Laura is Sean Glennon, freelance journalist living in Northhampton, Massachusetts. His work has appeared in the Boston Globe, the Boston Phoenix, Salon.com and other magazines. He has also written a book on the New England Patriots called "This Pats Year: A Trek Through a Football Season as a Football Fan." |
